History
The
Houma-Terrebonne Airport/Industrial Park is developed from the World War
II Naval Land Installation located in Houma, LA, in Terrebonne Parish.
The Installation's primary responsibility was the surveillance of German
U-Boat activity in the Gulf of Mexico. After the war, the federal government,
by way of a quit claim deed, transferred the Naval Land Installation to
the local government. The property, now called the Houma-Terrebonne Airport/Industrial
Park, is leased to general aviation and industrial tenants. The monies
received from the leases are utilized to maintain the airport. The Houma-Terrebonne
Airport/Industrial Park is self funded. No tax dollars, other than federal
project money, are received. In 1958 the Houma-Terrebonne Airport Commission
was 
created
by our local government to oversee and administer the airport and industrial
park area. Our airport has developed into one of the finest, state-of-the-art
airports in Louisiana. Complimenting the airport, is a large industrial
park with a varied client base.
The airport has grown dramatically since its 1958 creation. Significant improvements include:
- Establishment of the instrument landing system (ILS).
- Construction of the 450,000 sq. ft. aircraft parking ramp on the east side of the airport.
- Construction of the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower.
- Construction of a parallel taxiway to Runway 30.
- Construction of east and west Crash Fire and Rescue (CFR) Roads to the taxiway and runway systems.
- Overlay and rehabilitation to Taxiway "G".
- Exchange and purchase of property for future expansion to the north-south runway.
- Construction of the aviation security fence.
- 1,500' runway and parallel taxiway extension to Runway 36.
- Turning lanes (east and west entrances) to the industrial park, major drainage improvements (east side of the airport) and the establishment of municipal sewage (east side of airport).
- Construction of Compass Calibration Pad.
